“Exercise should be fun, otherwise, you won’t be consistent.”
- Laura Ramirez
In today’s fast-paced world, finding time for fitness can be difficult. The key to fitting fitness into your busy day is to make it convenient.
With 1,440 minutes in each day, it shouldn’t be that hard to find 30 minutes a day for moderate physical activity, as most doctors recommend. But it can be. Modern life is fast paced. For many people, days are a blur of work, household chores, errands, time with family and friends and, of course, sleep. With everything going on, finding those 30 minutes a day for exercise can be a challenge.
Still, even people with the busiest schedules can find room for fitness. The key is to make it as convenient as possible for your particular lifestyle.
Your whole family needs to stay active. Why not get fit together? Make exercise a family affair.
No matter how young or old you are, exercise can help everyone in your family. When you make exercise a family affair, you can help and support each other – especially when you don’t feel like exercising. Here are five tips to get started:
1. Make chores a competition.
Turn everyday housework into exercise. Combine fitness with your family chores and activities, such as raking leaves or gardening. See who can do chores or yardwork the fastest. Begin to see exercise as an everyday opportunity.
Housecleaning is a great way of burning off fat and calories. All that movement, stretching and bending can really help to tone up those muscles. You can use this to your advantage by actually treating it as a workout. Put on your exercise gear, turn up the volume on your favorite tunes and get cracking!
2. Turn TV time into exercise.
If TV is a must-see for you, it’s easy to let it cut into your workout time. But fitness doesn’t have to mean foregoing your favorite shows. How about working in a workout in front of the tube? Even fitness experts find TV-watching workouts helpful – and sometimes, a necessity.
It is absolutely possible to improve your fitness level in front of the TV, if the intensity is adequate, just as it is quite possible to go to a fitness center several times per week and NOT improve your fitness level. Given how much TV most of us watch, exercising at the same time is not a bad idea. Studies show that American men average 29 hours a week of TV watching, while women rack up about 34 hours. That gives us a lot of time to fit in some extra activity. Everyone can do push-ups or sit-ups during commercials.
3. Schedule a game.
Start your kids out right with a model for a healthy lifestyle for their lifetime.
Review your schedules to determine available blocks of time. Saturday morning is a great time for a family game of basketball, soccer, or running in the park. Choose activities that work for the whole family. If you have young children, consider bike riding, walking or pushing the stroller.
As with any type of new exercise, start slowly and increase length and frequency as everyone in the family adjusts to the new routine.
4. Be social.
You may enjoy exercise as a social activity and do better with the encouragement of others. Dance clubs, hiking groups, health clubs and park and recreation activities are examples. Also have fun with your neighbors. Make a date to hike in the park or take a trip to the zoo. That way, you can have fun together and still get some exercise.
5. Turn errands into exercise.
When you go to the mall or grocery store, park toward the back of the lot and walk the extra distance. If you have a little extra time, walk inside for a lap or two before you start shopping. Keep a pair of walking shoes in your car so that you’re ready when you find a few minutes for exercise.
There’s no single best way to fit exercise into your day. Your lifestyle, job and family responsibilities will point to the most convenient time and place for fitness.
Do what works for you.
And whatever option you choose, make daily exercise a habit you keep.
